KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Volunteers with Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity are busy constructing Kalamazoo’s first “tiny house” on the city’s east side.
Construction Manager Tom Tishler says concrete pours for the residence on Wallace Avenue began this week.
“We got a single individual who is low income and had a need for better housing,” Tishler said. “He came to us and said, ‘I would like a house as small as possible.’”
The 230 sq. ft. structure will be one of the smallest ever constructed by a Habitat chapter.
Tishler said it’s a unique build for the organization.
“We know of one, perhaps two other Habitat affiliates (that have constructed these tiny houses),” Tishler said. “One in particular in North Carolina got some press about a year ago for doing a 400 sq. ft. home.”
Tishler also said the building’s modest size will also make it one of the most energy-efficient they’ve constructed.
They’re hoping it’ll be done by the end of the year.
