PORTAGE (WKZO-AM) — Police say an 81-year-old Charles Burgan of Portage suffered only minor injuries after his SUV was struck by a train in Battle Creek.
The collision between the vehicle and the 1,100-foot train, which happened before 9 a.m. Thursday, forced a closure of Kendall Street at Dickman Road.
The vehicle was reportedly pushed around 350 yards, after police say Burgan went around the gates, thinking he could make it to the other side.
The train was carrying several chemicals, including sulfuric acid.
No leaks were found by Canadian National inspectors and the train was allowed to continue its trip after the SUV was removed from the tracks by a crane.
Investigators are still looking into the incident.
