KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The health advisory on the Kalamazoo River following the large sanitary sewer overflow from earlier this week has been lifted after tests revealed that water quality levels are within safe parameters.
Seven samples were taken along the river following the spill of 572,000 gallons of partially-treated sewage. The results were analyzed by the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department and they approved cancellation of the health advisory.
They say all surface water activities, including swimming, wading, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking, may resume between the Patterson Street Bridge and D Avenue.
Utilities Director Jim Baker said they haven’t seen a rain event like this for many years andautomatic systems that would have dealt with the additional flow of water were set too high.
That equipment has now been readjusted.
