KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A newly-hired resource deputy will be patrolling Gull Lake Schools this year.
Kalamazoo County Sheriff Rick Fuller says it’s something the district’s been talking about for a while.
“Their superintendent, Chris Rundle, came to me a couple of years ago,” Fuller said. “Ultimately, it came to fruition.”
He says the aim is not only to make the schools safer, but also expose students to law enforcement in a positive way.
“Our goal is that students will become comfortable with a law enforcement figure,” Fuller said. “Somebody they can go to, somebody they can learn from, and somebody that can be there at times of need for the school.”
The $107,000 contract was approved Tuesday by county commissioners. The district will foot nearly $89,000 of that bill.
