KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Sixty thousand gallons of raw sewage has spilled into Portage Creek near the southern border of Kalamazoo.
Health officials are advising everyone to avoid contact with the water in the millpond and the creek. All swimming, wading, fishing, canoeing, and kayaking should cease, and children and pets should be kept out of the area.
The source of the spill was a clogged sewer main that forced the contaminated water to pour from a manhole in the 3500 block of South Burdick Street. They estimate the overflow began about 8 p.m. Monday and was not discovered and cleared until early Thursday.
Anyone who came in contact with the water this week should clean and disinfect any skin or clothing they were wearing.
