KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s deputies have been working with undercover teenagers to test local stores and markets to make sure they aren’t selling alcohol and tobacco to minors.
The age compliance checks are done periodically just to keep merchants and the clerks who work there on their toes. Teenagers working with the deputies went into 50 local businesses with liquor licenses and the minors were able to buy alcohol at five of them.
They went into 25 businesses that sell cigarettes. Three sold tobacco to minors.
In some cases, the cashiers never asked for identification and in others, they sold to the minor even after checking their legal age.
In each case the clerk was cited and will pay a fine, and the business will also be fined and a notice sent to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission.
