BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — Urban agriculture is a hot topic in Battle Creek right now, as the city considers the results of a poll that supports allowing some livestock in residential areas.
An urban farm that is already growing fresh vegetables in Battle Creek has taken a big step forward, buying the land they have been farming for the last four years on Kendall Street North. Sprout Urban Farms has been renting the land for $1 a year from the Calhoun County Land Bank.
They sell their produce at farmers markets, to local restaurants and school kitchens and also distribute the vegetables from a vehicle they call “Fresh on Wheels.”
The selling price was not disclosed.
