CASSOPOLIS (WKZO-AM) — An elderly tourist from Indiana is in critical condition after his floating lawn chair capsized on the west side of Diamond Lake.
Witnesses told Cass County Sheriff’s deputies that, just after 3 p.m. Saturday, someone spotted 84-year-old Paul Schafer’s hat floating on the water’s surface after he disappeared.
That triggered a response from family members, who jumped in and pulled him onto the dock.
He was unresponsive, so they began CPR until EMTs took over.
They managed to get him breathing again, but Schafer remains in critical condition at South Bend Memorial Hospital.
