KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The American flag has already flown at half-staff more times this year than all of last year, and it has been lowered many more times in Michigan than the rest of the nation.
By Friday, after the nation honors the three Baton Rouge police officers ambushed Sunday, the flag salute will have been ordered 43 times in Michigan. At least 17 of those days are due to the two mass-killings in Kalamazoo and the shooting deaths of two court officers in St. Joseph.
Gov. Rick Snyder ordered flags to half-staff for six days for the Kalamazoo mass-shooting victims in February. Last month, the flag was lowered nine days for the cyclists that were struck in Cooper Township, which overlapped with the national days of mourning for the nightclub shooting victims in Orlando.
Flags were, once again, lowered on Friday and Monday for the funerals in Benton Harbor.
