KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Beginning this weekend, hundreds of yellow-clad volunteers will be clearing trash from alongside major Michigan roadways.
MDOT spokesperson Nick Schirripa says 2016’s second “Adopt a Highway” period runs through July 24.
“If you’re driving anywhere in Michigan and you’re driving an M, an I or a U.S. route, please keep your eyes open,” Schirripa said.
He also says the effects of the program span beyond just beautification.
“Annually, we get about 70,000 bags and that generates roughly $5 million of value for state taxpayers,” Schirripa said. “There is actually an economic impact, here.”
The fall cleanup is scheduled to start in September.
