KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo County Sheriff Rick Fuller says he’s reflecting on courtroom protocols after two bailiffs were shot dead at the Berrien County Courthouse on Monday.
He said the county’s use of video for court appearances makes officers safer because it doesn’t subject them to vulnerabilities outside of the controlled atmosphere of jail.
“The system we have in place is one that I’m much more comfortable with than what we’ve had in the past,” Fuller said. “You’re probably going to find 83 sheriffs in the state of Michigan reviewing their processes.”
But he also said the system is too expensive for some of the state’s counties.
Accused Kalamazoo mass-shooter Jason Dalton and Charles Pickett Jr., the man accused of running down nine bicyclists in Cooper Township, made their initial court appearances using the equipment from the county lock-up.
