KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Lawmakers in St. Joseph say they’re mourning after two bailiffs were shot dead at the courthouse in Berrien County on Monday.
State Sen. John Proos saw the response to the incident from his district office a block away.
“I then learned, of course, of the lockdown and watched multiple agencies converge on the Berrien County Courthouse,” Proos said.
Proos said he was affected personally by the tragedy.
“I’ve known Joe for about 20 years,” Proos said. “Joe Zangaro, one of the bailiffs, he was a retired Michigan State Police post commander when I first got to know him.”
Congressman Fred Upton says the situation is heartbreaking for everyone in St. Joseph.
“Not only for the families of the officers, but the community too,” Upton said. “It’s a real punch to the gut.”
Upton said his colleagues in Congress have also expressed their condolences.
