CALHOUN COUNTY (WKZO-AM) — An off-duty Calhoun County Sheriff’s detective who followed the sound of crying to a crash scene is being credited with helping save the life of a two-year-old girl.
The crash killed the child’s father, a 35-year-old man from Sheridan Township.
The detective heard the crash off 23 Mile Road in Eckford Township at 12:30 a.m. Sunday. He called for assistance and headed for the crash scene.
Deputies believe the car was traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control on a curve, left the pavement and shot into a wooded area where it struck several trees. The man’s daughter, still strapped in her child seat, was pried out of the wreck and transported to the Pediatric Trauma Center at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo.
The child is listed in stable condition.
The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office’s Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating.
