BARRY COUNTY (WKZO-AM) — A west Michigan man and his girlfriend who allegedly beat his 66-year-old mother in her Barry County home and left her duct taped to a chair are jailed in Illinois and are awaiting extradition back to Michigan.
Sheriff Dar Leaf said he can only imagine what he put his mother through. Leaf said the suspect demanded money from his mother so he could leave the state and avoid arrest for violating probation.
When she refused, he claims the suspect threatened her with a knife, and then stole her car and her credit card. It took his mother six hours to loosen her bonds and call police.
They tracked her credit card to a motel in Rockford, Ill. That’s where the couple was busted.
The sheriff in Winnebago County, Ill., said the suspects in custody are Cory Wagner and Tiffany Chanthavong of Ottawa County, Mich.
Wagner fled the state because he was due in court this week to answer for an earlier assault on the same girlfriend who was with him when he was arrested. He had been ordered to stay away from her as a condition of his probation.
