BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — A soup kitchen in Battle Creek is closing temporarily due to a lack of funding.
The doors at God’s Kitchen on Capital Avenue Northeast will remain locked until August.
Officials at the church-owned organization claim fundraising is down because of the group’s religious nature and a negative perception of its operations.
“Our hearts are heavy at this time to temporarily close the soup kitchen when the need to feed hungry citizens and families is so great,” Pastor William Stein said in a press release that was sent to the media early Tuesday.
The agency has served and delivered over 102,000 meals since 2011.
The decision prompting the month-long closure was made by board members in May.
God’s Kitchen has set up a GoFundMe page, which can be accessed here.
