LANSING (WKZO-AM) — Legislation that was drafted because of Kalamazoo’s mass-shooting in February has now been signed into law by Governor Rick Snyder.
The fast-tracked bills create what was originally going to be an alert system that uses the same technology used by the Amber Alert to notify a community that an active shooter was at loose in their community.
It has since been expanded to include any emergency situation that may pose an imminent threat.
Sponsor Brandt Iden, R-Oshtemo, said it was a team effort with Reps. Jon Hoadley, D-Kalamazoo, and David Maturen, R-Brady Township. He said it was a direct result of the communications problems that were exposed by the events of Feb. 20.
The Michigan State Police will now go to work to set up the public threat alert system and follow the legislation to set up policies for when and how it will be triggered.
