KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — It looks like there are enough votes on the Kalamazoo County Commission to approve a “complete streets” resolution in two weeks.
Spurred on by the tragic death of five cyclists this month in Cooper Township, the policy could make area roads a little safer for pedestrians and bike riders.
Commissioner Dale Shugars said he thinks the road commission should find out where bicyclists ride and make accommodations for them as roads are repaired and redone. He said the policy is just a starting point. What’s needed next is an educational piece to make motorists and bikers more aware of each other and the rules of the road.
Kalamazoo and Oshtemo townships have already adopted the policy. The city of Kalamazoo is considering it.
Gov. Rick Snyder also supports the reforms.
