KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A 33-year-old man who fled to Indiana after shooting his girlfriend has been sentenced to at least 17 years in prison after striking a plea deal.
Victor Peery pleaded guilty to charges of assault with intent to murder and a felony firearm. Five other charges were dropped.
Kalamazoo Public Safety says Peery opened fire at the woman during an altercation at a home in the 700 block of Duke Lane on Feb. 21. She survived after being hospitalized with arm and shoulder wounds.
Peery wouldn’t be found until three days later, when tips led investigators to a family member’s residence in Muncie, Ind.
He surrendered after SWAT officers served a search warrant.
