KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo Public Schools trustees are counting their blessings after getting their first look at next year’s proposed budget.
For the first time in a while, it doesn’t propose any cuts. In fact, it actually includes funding for a few new programs that should improve graduation rates and literacy.
Gary Start, the assistant superintendent for finance, said they have the money because of thrifty spending this school year and because they are projecting an increase in enrollment, which will also bring in new revenue.
He said they expect to have about $425,000 to spend on new programs.
One new effort will focus on helping kids in academic peril by using alternative teaching methods, like computer-based teaching aides. to help them earn a diploma. They also plan to add additional literacy and math coaches.
Start said they would also like to spend a little more to pay bus drivers, cafeteria workers and playground monitors who are in short-supply.
The proposed budget will be back for a final vote in two weeks.
