KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The Chain Gang Bicycle Club in Kalamazoo wants to complete the ride started by nine members of their group last Tuesday. Five were killed and four hospitalized when they were struck by a man in a pickup a week ago today.
But organizers now fear that, because Lance Armstrong will be taking part, the event could be overwhelmed by the number of cyclists who want to participate. They are trying to limit it to local bike club members and friends and family of the victims.
Rachel Kaiser with Kalamazoo Strong said they could potentially draw cyclists from all over the state, and they have been helping with the message that the group would rather keep it local.Kalmazoo Strong will be hosting their own bike ride on June 26 that will be open to everyone.
They’re asking people who want to support the riders to stand alongside the route and cheer them on.
Some cyclists have threatened to boycott the event because of Armstrong’s controversial career.
