KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Paul Seldon, the Director of Road Safety for the Kalamazoo Bicycle Club, says what happened Tuesday night on North Westnedge Avenue in Cooper Township was a senseless tragedy – the worst ever certainly in Kalamazoo County and perhaps in state history.
He said he can only imagine what the families of the victims are going through right now, saying he may know some of the riders involved if it’s the group that was scheduled to be riding in that area last night.
Seldon also said he hopes something good can come from all this, that local officials will be galvanized to make the community more bicycle friendly. He also hopes it reinforces the importance of road safety on all motorists and bike riders at this time of the year when they are sharing the roads more and more.
Seldon was interviewed during Kalamazoo’s Morning News on Wednesday. You can listen to the interview here.
A statement written by Seldon on Tuesday is below:
“I know from working closely with area leadership that we are working to make our community even more bicycle friendly. This senseless tragedy — in my memory, the worst of its kind in Kalamazoo County, and possibly in the entire State of Michigan — underscores that we can do much more. Motorists and bicyclists need to share the road safely throughout the year, but especially during peak bicycling season.”
