KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Western Michigan University was hoping to see a four percent increase in state funding this coming school year, which would bring them back to the figure they were receiving before Gov. Rick Snyder was elected and education funding was slashed.
But the governor’s proposal to increase higher education funding by $60 million this coming year was trimmed back to $40 million because the state is facing a half-billion dollar shortfall this and next year.
The cut to higher education was just one of the programs taking a hit because of the shortfall.
The proposed budget calls for $1.4 billion for higher education next year.
