KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A major leader in Kalamazoo’s education and civil rights communities has died.
Dr. Charles Warfield, the current President of the Kalamazoo Metropolitan Branch of the NAACP and a retired Western Michigan University professor died Sunday after battling an aggressive form of cancer.
He was a former school board trustee and helped organize the Northside Ministerial Alliance. Warfield also spent over four decades helping to turn out future educators as an associate professor of educational leadership at WMU.
His wife, Dr. Martha Warfield, is still on the staff at WMU and is currently a Kalamazoo Public Schools trustee.
