KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — As we were first to report Friday morning, Attorney General Bill Schuette has asked the federal government to rescind President Barack Obama’s order that School Districts nationwide allow transgender students to use the bathroom of their choice.
He outlined his three priorities on the issue at Thursday night’s Lincoln Day Dinner in Kalamazoo. He says first is that its federal over-reach, second that parents should be involved in the decision process, and finally that it’s a decision that should be made by states and local school districts.
The reaction has been swift and angry from civil rights organizations and groups like Progress Michigan who charged Schuette with “standing on the side of bullies and abusers who want to demonize and ostracize transgender students because of fear and ignorance.”
Nine other states have filed suit challenging the President’s order. The White House has said that failure to comply could mean the loss of federal funding for school districts.
