LANSING (WKZO-AM) — The public alert system proposed as a result of February’s mass murder in Kalamazoo to alert the community there is an active shooter at large as advanced another step toward final approval, heading now for the floor of the senate.
It was moved on by the Senate Judiciary Committee after hearings on Tuesday.
The proposal would set up a new system patterned after the Amber Alert system that would be triggered in a community when there is an active shooter at large through the news and social media.
Rep. David Maturen, R-Vicksburg, testified at the committee hearing that a phone app would allow anyone to receive the warnings.
The system, initially proposed by Rep. Jon Hoadley, D-Kalamazoo, and Rep. Brandt Iden, R-Oshtemo, now goes to the full Senate for their consideration.
