KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo Public Safety is making progress in the investigation into a fatal shooting at Mabel Street and North Westnedge Avenue that left one man dead and wounded two others Monday night.
The victim who died has been identified as 38-year-old Niquay DeJuan Baker, a Kalamazoo native who is now living in Illinois.
They reportedly have taken two persons of interest into custody after flooding 11th Street in Oshtemo Township with police officers late Tuesday afternoon. Its an area where there are a number of apartment complexes.
The pair may have been identified by tips from people who were either at the scene of the shooting, or involved in some other way.
The two men were questioned Tuesday evening and into Wednesday morning but have not been arrested, Lt. Brad Misner said. Their names aren’t being released.
Investigators know that at least two guns were used because they recovered two different kinds of shell casings at the murder scene.
It happened just after 10 p.m. Monday. A crowd had gathered in one of the vacant lots at the north side intersection when an argument broke out and shots were fired.
The first officers on the scene began life saving protocols and handed Baker off to EMTs who continued those efforts on the way to Bronson Emergency.
He was pronounced dead later at the hospital.
Investigators taped off the two lots and about half a block of Mabel to search for clues with flashlights and brought in a fire truck with search lights.
Two others wounded suffered non-life threatening injuries and are in stable condition. Their names have not been released. They arrived at Bronson Emergency by private vehicle soon after Baker arrived by ambulance.
