UNDATED (WKZO-AM) — Federal hydrologists say the water levels in Lake Michigan and Lake Huron are about nine inches higher than last year.
Keith Kompoltolowicz with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Detroit says levels are approaching 1986 record highs after flirting with 1964 record lows three years ago.
“We had some extreme winters, very cold with lots of snow and rain in the spring, and the level has come back some three and a half or four feet,” Kompoltolowicz said.
That’s causing concern about beaches shrinking significantly, and shoreline erosion has also sped up a bit, but Kompoltolowicz says it’ll be a easier to get boats and ships out of harbor.
