KALAMAZOO TOWNSHIP (WKZO-AM) — A fire has destroyed the Sports Forum restaurant in Kalamazoo Township.
Smoke was first spotted before 5 a.m. Thursday at the establishment just north of Kalamazoo. The building soon erupted in flames.
It had closed at midnight and no one was inside the structure. Kalamazoo Township fire units responding from the station just down the street could see the smoke and flames in the 800 block of Mosel Avenue.
First responders said the roof collapsed over the kitchen soon after their arrival, forcing them to fight the blaze from the parking lot and from an aerial truck.
There were no injuries reported. Investigators suspect it may have started in the kitchen of the facility but no cause has been determined.
No damage estimate has been released.
Firefighters were hampered because the back of the structure is next to a creek and a wooded area and it was difficult to access the back portion of the building.
Traffic control was complicated because a car struck the back of a fire vehicle.
