PORTAGE (WKZO-AM) — Portage Public Schools board members will vote June 13 on a $240,000 purchase that would put new Chromebooks in the hands of district teachers by fall.
The move would get the district closer to achieving its one-to-one computing goal.
“If you want to be successful, you have to get the devices to the teachers first then train them for best practices with those devices,” Dan Vomastek, the district’s IT director, said.
Vomastek said the idea is simple: Once teachers get the hang of the computers, they can educate students.
He also said that specific education isn’t a luxury.
“The skills that we’re teaching are the skills that they’re going to need in the workforce,” Vomastek said. “It’s almost impossible these days to find a job these days where you don’t have to have comfort with technology-based tools.”
If the teacher rollout goes smoothly, students should start seeing Chromebooks next year.
Money from the $144 million bond issue last approved last November will pay for the devices.
