KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — High school students in Kalamazoo students ran a food drive on the same day this past weekend that mail carriers were collecting food, and for the same reason.
With the long summer break for schools just ahead, thousands of youngsters from low income families who rely on school breakfast and lunch programs will lose access to those meals until school resumes in the fall.
That means there’s more pressure on parents to make sure there is food at home — something that isn’t always easy to do on limited incomes.
Food banks really need the donations this time of the year to beef up the supply at community pantries.
The 2,300 pounds of food and $700 cash collected by the students at three area grocery stores on Saturday is enough for 4,200 meals
The donations have been given to Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes.
