KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — It’s not a new scam, but the latest version in Kalamazoo has a bizarre twist that should tip off any victims that it’s not the real deal.
Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas said a victim, usually a senior citizen, will get a call that a family member is in jail and needs to be bonded out.
The caller, pretending to be the family member, then hands the phone to someone pretending to be a lawyer, who tells the victim to purchase iTunes cards worth $2,000 and $3,000 from a local store.
Then later they have the victim give numbers on the card to the phony attorney.
Those with more information about the scam are being urged to contact the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office at (269) 383-8821.
