KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — A Western Michigan University student from Fruitport has been struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in the 5400 block of KL Avenue.
Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s deputies have identified, arrested and released a suspect, a 22-year-old woman who may have been drunk at the time of the crash.
They say 21-year-old Nicholas Heil was jogging along the north side of the road at about 9:22 p.m. Wednesday in an area of the road that widened for turning traffic when he was struck from behind by the driver in a white SUV. The vehicle did not stop, and was located two hours later at another apartment complex.
Heil was loaded on an ambulance but died before arriving at Bronson Methodist Hospital.
The driver was questioned and arrested for failure to render aid and leaving the scene of a fatal traffic accident.
Deputies say there were indications that alcohol may have been a factor.
She was booked into the Kalamazoo County Jail and released Thursday morning, pending the results of blood tests and further investigation.
