OSHTEMO (WKZO-AM) — Several pastors throughout Michigan will sleep in tents Friday to support the Rev. Michael Tupper, who has spent months in a tent outside churches nationwide to show support for people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender.
The Rev. John Fisher will also set up a tent outside his church in Oshtemo at Stadium and Mill Creek drives, but said he will support the demonstration in a different way.
“I will physically sleep in the sanctuary Friday night into Saturday morning to mention that, at the Oshtemo Methodist Church, everyone is welcome and everyone is accepted,” Fisher said.
The United Methodist Church disallows LGBTQ community members from participating in the denomination.
Tupper himself, who is the pastor of the Parchment Methodist Church, had been previously scorned by members of the church for officiating multiple gay weddings, including the wedding of his lesbian daughter.
Members of the church are in Oregon for the next two weeks discussing policy.
