LANSING (WKZO-AM) — The Michigan House has given overwhelming support to a three-bill package initiated following the mass murders in Kalamazoo.
The bills would create a system to notify the public when there is an active shooter in the community.
The system would send advisories to local media and through social media, much like the Amber Alert system works to notify the public about missing children.
The bills were sponsored by Reps. John Hoadley, D-Kalamazoo, Brandt Iden, R-Ostemo, and David Maturen, R-Vicksburg. Iden said they are hoping for Senate passage within the next few months.
The Michigan State Police would be in charge of the system and decide when the report of an active shooter, a terrorist or an at-large gunmen met the criteria for issuing the warning.
