BATTLE CREEK (WKZO-AM) — The Battle Creek Fire Department is now in possession of a 48-inch block of steel from the center column of one of the World Trade Center towers that was pulled from the rubble after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Fire Chief Dave Schmaltz said it was placed in the bed of a department pickup and hauled back from New York last month.
“We want to be able to display it so everybody in the community and the surrounding communities have an opportunity to come look at it and reflect,” Schmaltz said.
Schmaltz says the department is now turning to the community, trying to figure out how to best display the nearly 650-pound artifact.
