PORTAGE (WKZO-AM) — Homeowners in the Ringdale Plat in Portage will be losing the extra parking spaces they’ve built into their curb lawns next to their residential streets.
It will be made official during the Portage City Council meeting on Tuesday.
Portage Transportation Director Chris Barnes said that the right-of-way belongs to the city and not homeowners. Barnes has also compiled a list of why it’s not a good idea to have cars parked along streets.
Barnes said Portage considered enforcing a ban on such encroachments in 2000, but shelved it because of the number of the spaces scattered across town. They decided instead to only remove them when they repave streets.
Homeowners argue they’ve had the extra parking spaces for decades, and losing them will mean surrendering part of their yards for parking.
The good news? Homeowners will enjoy a freshly-paved street.
