KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — This year is the 20th anniversary of the Race for the Cure in Kalamazoo, but the fundraiser for breast cancer research has fallen behind this year due to a tragedy.
The usual organizer of the event, Denise Bohn-Stewart, a radio personality from St. Joseph who survived a bout with breast cancer, was murdered a few weeks ago. Police say she was shot by her husband before he turned the gun on himself.
Susan G. Komen of Michigan Executive Director Jennifer Jurgens said the deadline to register online is Tuesday, but it’s still possible to register at the event itself on Saturday.
Registrations and pledges are down about 50 percent this year, but Jurgens hopes a surge these last few days will get them closer to their $60,000 goal. Currently, fundraising is at about a third of that.
For the first time, the event will be staged at Homer Stryker Field, which is located off King Highway.
