KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — The Kalamazoo County Transportation Authority is asking voters to approve a lower millage to fund the Metro County Connect service.
If approved, taxpayers with $100,000 homes would pay $15.75 a year to fund the origin-to-destination service, which is fractionally less than what they’re paying now. Chairperson Linda Teeter says the service is cheaper to operate because of efficiency improvements, but also says that’s not the only reason why the authority is asking for the lower millage.
“Second, we have some fund balance that we want to spend down, third, there was a millage passed last summer that was specifically for fixed-route service,” Teeter said.”
Teeter says use of the service is growing 15 percent annually. The service recently began offering Sunday service and plans to expand weekday and Saturday hours on July 1.
The millage will be up for a vote May 3.
