LANSING (WKZO-AM) — The explosion of opioid addicts has doubled the number of babies born addicted to drugs in Michigan, from 400 to well over 800 per year between 2010 and 2014.
It may be even higher now.
The Michigan Department of Public Health is distributing a video that shows women of child-bearing age exactly what can happen if they continue to use heroin, oxycodone or other opiates during their pregnancy. The video includes interviews with doctors who explain the medical problems such infants face, and with mothers who explain the emotional pain and suffering.
It’s required by law to report such cases to state health officials. There can also be criminal prosecution and the termination of all parental rights in such cases.
They are making the video available to convince female addicts to seek treatment if they become pregnant.
