LANSING (WKZO-AM) — New research shows that one of the tools used by Michigan sobriety courts to keep drunk drivers off the road is working.
Kalamazoo’s sobriety court was one of five to participate in the study. Sobriety Interlock devices have now been part of their program for five years.
The devices are installed in the violator’s car. It’s a built-in breathalyzer that keeps the vehicle from starting if the driver has any trace of alcohol in their breath.
Offenders who don’t get the devices are three times more likely to get drunk again and drive, fail the sobriety program and sometimes end up in jail. That was the main finding of the report, commissioned by the Michigan Association of Treatment Court Professionals.
