KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Secretary of State Ruth Johnson is urging more organ donor sign-ups in April, which is Organ Donor Awareness Month.
She said, currently, 3,500 Michiganders are waiting for organs.
“The stories can be so gut-wrenching — a teenage boy in Grand Rapids, he has dreams of buying a car and going to college, but he needs a heart,” Johnson said. “Or, a 41-year-old mom who is fighting just to stay healthy enough to take care of her three-year-old son, she needs a kidney.”
About 55 percent of Michigan adults are on the registry, Johnson said. Years ago, that figure was 27 percent.
“We’ve added 2.2 million names since 2011,” Johnson said. “That’s enough to fill the Wings Event Center 425 times.”
You can add yourself to the registry by visiting to a branch office or going to the Secretary of State’s website.
