KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Two Kalamazoo Public Safety officers are recovering from injuries they suffered when they were tangled up in a crash caused by a drunk driver early Sunday morning on an icy Howard Street, just north of the dual roundabouts adjacent to the Western Michigan University campus.
The officers responded to an initial report of a crash in the 600 block of South Howard Street caused by icy road conditions. While they were there, another car lost control and crashed.
They were standing outside their cruiser before 3 a.m. when a third driver slid on the ice and smashed into the vehicles where the two officers were standing. They could not jump to safety in time.
One officer was admitted to Bronson Methodist Hospital with a head injury and is listed in stable condition.
The other was treated for a back injury at Bronson’s emergency room and released.
The 22-year-old Kalamazoo driver who caused that third wreck was arrested for driving while intoxicated and driving on an expired license. He was booked into the Kalamazoo County Jail.
He could be facing felony charges when he is arraigned.
