LANSING (WKZO-AM) — The Michigan Department of Education and the Michigan State Board of Education has decided to extend a comment period on proposed guidelines for schools on how to treat lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students fairly.
The proposals would be voluntary and are designed to lend guidance to local educators with an issue they have to deal with more and more. The proposal has been out there for comment since February, but Republican lawmakers didn’t discover it until this week.
Rep. Triston Cole, R-Mancelona, is now calling on parents who might find this objectionable to respond, saying he doesn’t want boys in the girls bathroom or locker room.
Rep. Jon Hoadley, D-Kalamazoo, said such comments are factually inaccurate. He says the policy is simply designed to bring fairness to schools and to introduce methods to deal with harassment and bullying.
The deadline for comment had been April 11. It’s now been extended into early May.
