LANSING (WKZO-AM) — The Michigan Senate has agreed to ask the federal government to install technology in Illinois waters that would stop the spread of Asian Carp into Lake Michigan and beyond.
State Sen. John Proos, R-St. Joseph, said the infamous fish is getting too close for comfort.
“They continue up the Mississippi River and up the Chicago waterway system toward the Great Lakes water basin,” Proos said.
Proos also said the spread has been rapid.
“Sixty-seven miles in the last year, meaning that they’re only 75 miles from the Great Lakes right now,” Proos said.
And he said Michigan would the first to notice the effects of the new resident.
“We’ll start to see the depletion of the regular fishing stock here in Michigan,” Proos said. “That’s a $7 billion industry that could be completely wiped out.”
It is feared the invasive species would cause an ecological disaster by depleting food sources for native sport fish.
