KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo’s Lift Foundation has just won a multi-year competition for state housing funding which will inject about $9.2 million into the local economy and renovate an aging apartment complex on the city’s east side.
David Anderson, the chairman of the foundation, said they’ve been working for years to acquire one of these grants. New Horizon Village off Gull Road was originally built as subsidized housing decades ago, but Anderson it’s showing its age.
It will be renovated to create 79 low-income apartments. 20 will be set aside for residents with disabilities, 43 will be subsidized housing for low-income families and 16 will be rented at market rate.
The complex will not only get a facelift, but a new name: Heather Gardens.
Anderson said, if all goes as planned, they could be renting the first remodeled units by November.
