SPRINGFIELD (WKZO-AM) — The Department of Natural Resources says hundreds of crows died from blunt-force trauma when they were struck by one or more Amtrak trains in western Calhoun County earlier this month.
That was the original assessment for the mass-killing, which took place a few weeks ago and again in February. The site was found a few hundred feet down the tracks near Springfield.
The DNR has since sent livers taken from some of the dead birds to the lab to test for pesticides and other poisons, but the tests found nothing unusual.
It’s still not clear why the birds were unable to get out of the train’s path.
