KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — Kalamazoo College’s athletic department is on probation after an NCAA investigation uncovered major financial aid, recruiting and monitoring violations.
The Division III school has been banned from participating in postseason and conference tournaments for the next three years.
The announcement comes after the completion of an NCAA investigation that began in 2014. They discovered the school had a system in place for about five years that awarded additional financial aid based on athletic ability and participation, which the association prohibits.
Emails sent to 30 basketball recruits indicated that coaches could increase aid based on written recommendations.
In a statement, the school says it has since changed its practices and plans to file an appeal, but also admitted at least one student on each team still receives the impermissible aid.
The bans will not be in effect while the rulings are being appealed.
