KALAMAZOO (WKZO-AM) — State Sen. Rick Jones says he’s expecting his bill requiring mandatory water testing at Michigan schools to be on Gov. Rick Snyder’s desk within the next three months.
Jones, R-Grand Ledge, said both parties like the plan and passage is likely after Snyder put something similar in his spending proposal.
“With the governor putting it in his budget, it certainly helps my bill along,” Jones said.
Jones said it may cost more to do the testing, but also said the survey is crucial.
“It may be a little costly, but what cost is a child’s life worth? We must make sure that our children are protected,” Jones said.
A USA Today investigation uncovered nearly 2,000 water systems nationwide have elevated lead levels. Roughly 350 systems provide water to schools or day cares, the publication reported.
