LANSING (WKZO-AM) — A law professor at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School says President Obama’s made a good choice selecting Merrick Garland to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court.
Devin Schindler said Garland has several Republican-favorable qualities, like his conservative stances on criminal justice.
“Now, he tends to be a little more liberal on things like environmental law and civil rights, but we really don’t have a large record there,” Schindler said. “If this was a normal year, not an election year, this is exactly the kind of candidate the Republicans would want.”
He said Obama’s trying to paint Republicans into a corner.
“The fact that he picked a 63-year-old moderate tells me this is very much a political pick,” Schindler said.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told Garland over the phone Wednesday that Republicans will not act on the nomination.
