LANSING (WKZO-AM) — The Michigan House has approved a legislation package sponsored by Rep. John Bizon, R-Battle Creek, that removes multiple offensive and out-of-date terms from state statutes.
Bizon said the five bills that were passed would get rid of words and phrases that those with hearing difficulties may find offensive.
“The terms that we have removed are ‘deaf’ and ‘dumb,’ because people that can’t hear aren’t necessarilly dumb.”
The terms “deaf mute” and “hearing impaired” have also been erased.
“Even the term ‘hearing impaired’ suggests the person is broken or deficient, and that isn’t the case,” Bizon said.
The package is now being considered by the Senate.
